Boston!

I have always wanted to visit Boston and last week I was able to do just that. One of my best friends, Kali, got married this last summer and moved to Boston with her husband who is attending grad school out there. We started planning my visit before she even moved. I went for 9 days and we packed in a lot. Here is an overview of my trip.

I arrived in Boston in the evening and Kali and Wade came to pick me up from the airport. While I made it safe and sound, my luggage was nowhere to be found.

Kali and Wade live in the middle of the city, surrounded by Italian restaurants and pastry shops. Walking out of thier apartment onto the street you can smell baking bread, garlic, and the yummy smells of Italian food. It was delightful. That night we went to a pastry shop to get some goodies then decided to spend the night at their apartment so that we would be there when my luggage was delivered. I spent the night just getting settled in and we ended up going to bed with the luggage still M.I.A. The next thing I know, I am waking up at 5 am to a terribly loud noise that scared me so bad I think I jumped about a foot out of my bed. My luggage had arrived. The concept of "buzzing" to get into someone's apartment was one that I quickly got introduced to.

The next day, we went with a couple from their ward to volunteer at the church cannery/storehouse. We spent several hours there cleaning and helping them do lots of random things. We had fun working with the storehouse employees and missionaries and got several good laughs throughout the day. I was entertained just listening to their Boston accents.
After we came home from the storehouse we got some pizza from one of the many restaurants near the apartment. Going to this pizza place epitomized Boston culture. We walked in the door and everyone that worked there was yelling frantically (I pretty much couln't understand half of what they were saying). No hello. No friendly greeting. As Kali put it, "it's not required to be nice here."
On Saturday night, we got a call saying that it was supposed to snow so they were cancelling chucrh. (Very weird coming from Logan where we trudge to church in 3 feet of snow.) So, we slept in and Kali got up to make breakfast. In the process of cutting open the bag of waffle mix, she proceeded to nearly slice of her finger and the day took and unexpected turn. Lots and lots of blood and a trip to the emergency room later, she came home all bandaged up. We just lounged around that day and made some treats, played Rummikub, and watched the Office.
Chex mix - our favorite treat!
On Monday we did some more exploring. Kali was excited to show me Crate & Barrel because she knew my love for all things dealing with the kitchen. And she was right, I loved it! We went out to dinner that night and a delicious restaurant and had, of course, fettuccini alfredo.
The next day, after a practice run, talking it through over and over again, and a wonderful map drawn by Kali, I was very proud of myself for navigating the streets of Boston by myself to successfully find Kali's work where I met her for lunch :)
That night we went to Modern Pastry and had some delicious chocolate cupcakes.
We also went to the harbor. There was a beautiful view of the city and we wandered around admiring all of the boats. Our trip to the harbor was cut short since it was vital that we get home so we didn't miss the beginning of American Idol!
The next day we went to the aquarium and we had so much fun! We absoutely loved it and were so sad that we had to leave because is was closing.
There were so many different kinds of jellyfish and they were all so intriguing. We had all recently see the movie Seven Pounds and were a little freaked out by them, but they were still really cool.
These little guys were so cool! They were called dragon somethings...they were my favorite thing there.
There were also lots of penguins and they were so cute! The next day we went to the museum of science. (This picture is the view out the window of the museum.) We could have spent all day there and still not have seen everything. There were rooms about math and science, robots, weather, dinosaurs, space, the human body, mythical creatures, light, and so much more. We barely scratched the surface of what was in the museum but we absoutley loved everything that we were able to see and do.

After the museum closed, we went to Harvard. It was big, and it was freezing so we didn't spend much time looking around but it was cool to be there.
The next day Kali didn't have to work at all...hooray! So we spent the day cruising around the city. We went to Paul Revere's house, and the Old North Church which is right in their backyard. At this point we were debating if we had it in us to really be out in the cold. It was 15 degrees outside and the wind was blowing making it feel even colder. We decided we would go back to the apartment, make some hot chocolate to bring with us, and continue on our way. So off we went to Bunker Hill. Yes, we climbed 294 winding steps.
And it was a great view.
After Bunker Hill we met up with Wade and went to the Christian Science Church. We got a tour and it was beautiful inside and out. We then went to the Prudential building where we went up to the 50th floor where you can look out over the whole city. They give you a speaker thing that tells you about a lot of the different buildings around the city and the history that goes along with the different sites. This was one of my favorite parts of the whole trip. The view was absoutely amazing and it was really cool to learn more about the city.
We got there at sunset so it was really pretty. That really bright thing is Fenway Park. The next morning we had breakfast at Dunkin Donuts then got a zipcar and went out to the Boston temple. We got home that night and decided it was time for an Office marathon. We made a pan of rice crispy treats, and half a loaf of french bread. After one very long marathon, the picture says it all.
Before we knew it, our time was up. I feel like I would have had to stay another month to see everything that there is to see there! After sharing our whole college experience together and spending practically every moment together, 6 months has seemed like forever for Kali and I to be apart. The best part of the trip for me was just being able to spend time together and do nothing really. We got to do all of our favorite things: eat out, watch The Office, stay up and talk, and make treats...
some of which turned out better than others.
I can't wait to go back and visit again!

It was hard to keep from crying as I read. I'm just remembering all the enjoyable experiences I had there too. I'm so glad you were able to see so much in so little time. Kali is going to have that city completely memorized head to toe with all the guests she is being hostess to. What a great trip you had and I do hope too you will get to out and see her and Wade again!
